The Havanese is a wonderful breed that loves ALL people, especially children. They are considered a toy breed measuring between 8 1/2 to 11 1/2 inches at the top of the shoulder. They usually weigh between 8 and 14 pounds. The Havanese is smart and easy to train. They excel in obedience and agility. They love learning tricks and new things. They are also pretty easy to house-train if you make it clear what you want from them. Clicker training works well for this and anything else you want to train them. I recommend the clicker training book and a clicker as one of the first items you purchase. The Havanese are happiest when they are part of your family. They can become shy and standoffish if not enough interaction with the family is experienced, so they are not a dog to be purchased to decorate your backyard. If socialized properly they also make wonderful therapy dogs as they love affection and attention. The Havanese is a long haired non shedding breed, with no dog odor. They are good for people with allergies as most people with dog allergies tolerate Havanese very well. Since they are non-shedding they do mat and need to be brushed several times a week to keep them tangle free. Their coat can also be kept in a puppy cut which makes grooming much easier. The Havanese is very hardy and healthy with very few health issues if purchased from a reputable breeder. The main issues are early onset cataracts, patellar luxation, aseptic necrosis of the femoral head, deafness and liver shunt. Most are rare and not life threatening. My pet puppies come with dew claws removed and have a full health warranty against any genetic defects without any conditions or exceptions. The puppies are raised in my home along with the rest of my dogs and are very well socialized both with adults and children before they go to their new homes.
